DaMDamin Participants Complete their Pre-immersion Orientation

June 16, 2024

A three-day pre-deployment workshop aimed to equip the students with the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed for their field immersion in Northern Samar. Through interactive discussions, team-building activities, and direct community engagement, participants gained a deeper understanding of the Philippine health system and their role in addressing health inequities.

The DaMDamin Pre-Departure Orientation was the first step in an eye-opening journey into rural healthcare. Over three days, participants engaged with leading public health experts, including Dr. Manuel Dayrit and Dr. Beverly Ho, who shared their experiences in shaping health policies and addressing systemic challenges.

The program proper began at the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health, where participants met their cohort for the first time. A special mass with Fr. Jett Villarin, SJ, set the tone for reflection on the role of compassion in healthcare.

The workshop continued at Mount Purro Nature Reserve, where participants bonded through team-building activities, learned effective communication strategies from Johns Hopkins experts, and visited Sitio Apia—an off-grid community where they engaged directly with local households. Former Doctors to the Barrios (DTTBs) also shared their firsthand experiences of working in rural healthcare, providing practical guidance and inspiration.

The orientation ended with a Q&A session and logistical discussion, ensuring participants are fully prepared for their 10-day deployment in Northern Samar. Through this immersive experience, the hope is that these future health leaders develop the knowledge, empathy, and resilience needed to make a meaningful impact in underserved communities.
