Alfredo R.A. Bengzon

Dr. Alfredo Rafael Antonio Bengzon is a distinguished Filipino physician and public servant whose career has greatly influenced healthcare and social reform in the Philippines. As Secretary of Health (1986-1992), he spearheaded the Generic Drug Law, which made medicines more affordable and raised the market share of generics to 64%. He also championed family planning initiatives, advocating for access to vital resources despite opposition from religious sectors.
Beyond healthcare, Bengzon led negotiations with armed groups and shaped key military base agreements with the U.S. as head of the Peace Commission. A respected educator, he earned degrees from Ateneo de Manila University and the University of the Philippines, later serving as Dean at both the Ateneo Graduate School of Business and Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health.
As former President and CEO of The Medical City, he expanded healthcare through a patient-centered approach. Bengzon's legacy of public service and leadership earned him awards, including the 1991 Ramon Magsaysay Award and the 2012 Asia CEO Lifetime Achievement Award.
